Why Some Women Don't Sew
There's a funny story about why the women in my family don't sew, and it goes like this:
My grandmother was darning socks one day as she sat in her rocking chair. She dropped the spool of thread, and she leaned over the chair to catch the thread which was rolling out of her reach. As she leaned, she tipped the chair over, catching her foot under the weight of the chair - and her own weight - breaking her ankle. She declared that she would never darn another sock again. Consequently, my mother doesn't sew.
It makes me wonder what other fine arts & family traditions have been lost due to similar tragedies...

WOW what a story! Does this mean that members of your family don't have rocking chairs either? Is is also why members of your family don't wear socks without holes? Maybe they don't even wear socks!I hope nobody in your family ever burned themselves on the stove cooking dinner or was injured in a car crash! Wow! being without cooked food or wheeled transportation would make for a terribly sacrificial life! Your poor family....
No - see, it wasn't the act of rocking that caused her to break her ankle - it was the SEWING!!
The socks without holes - yes, that is the case. *sigh*
Last I checked they had rocking chairs but kept them away from the wee ones. I remember sustaining a few injuries from those chairs and henceforth awareness is greatly appreciated. Now I'd better proofread my comment so that I don't get harrassed by TradCatholic. . . hmmm. . . . Looks okay at first glance. I think I'll chance it. . .
I've become convinced that sewing is an art that skips a generation. For you see that my mother didn't sew (an odd coincidence) but I was mad for sewing. I sewed by hand, I embroidered, I made the dreaded apron, I took sewing classes.
Now my daughters do not sew. They are not interested in sewing and would not be caught dead sewing.
So my granchildren (if I have any) will sew.
Mary I am not sure of your idea about skipping generations. My grandmother sewed (my great grandfather was a well known tailor in NYC), my mother sewed..but only when I was a little kid....she hasn't sewn for a LONG time. And I LOVE to sew but I stink at it.
